Sustainability in the Portuguese Wine Sector
The Portuguese wine sector has seen significant growth, driven by the rise in wine tourism and the increasing demand for distinctive and sustainable wines. To ensure that this growth occurs in a balanced and responsible manner, sustainability certification has taken on a leading role, promoting practices that respect the environment and improve the competitiveness of Portuguese wines on the global market.
Kiwa Portugal is responsible for the sustainability certification granted by ViniPortugal, thus ensuring that producers adopt appropriate environmental, ethical and social practices. This certification reinforces the Portuguese wine sector's commitment to a more sustainable future.
Among the main certifications are the Alentejo Wine Sustainability Program (PSVA) and the National Sustainability Certification Reference for the Wine Sector (SSV). The PSVA, developed by the Alentejo Regional Wine Commission, applies specifically to the Alentejo region. On the other hand, the SSV, created by the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (IVV, I.P.) and managed by ViniPortugal, has a national scope. Both certifications follow strict criteria, allowing producers to obtain a seal of sustainability after verification of compliance with technical standards.
Sustainability certification encourages more efficient and environmentally friendly viticulture, promoting measures such as:
- Use of organic matter to nourish the vines, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers;
- Removal of chemical products from the soil, replacing them with natural and sustainable methods;
- Weed control through mechanical processes, minimizing environmental impact;
- Reduction of the ecological footprint, with initiatives such as the use of lighter and more recyclable bottles, zero-waste programs and the installation of renewable energies, such as solar power plants.
As well as guaranteeing the quality and sustainability of products, wine sustainability certifications allow Portuguese wines to stand out on the national and international markets, reinforcing their competitiveness and credibility.
Kiwa Portugal continues to support wine companies on their journey towards more responsible practices, contributing to a more innovative, balanced sector in harmony with nature.
