Recyclass Traceability certification

The Recycled Plastics Traceability Audit Scheme assesses the physical traceability of recycled plastic material throughout all the actors of the value chain, while verifying the origin of pre- and post-consumer material in product claims. RecyClass Traceability Certification is specially focused on traceability of plastic materials. This certification provides evidence of the identified source of recycled plastic material and quantifies the recycled content in each product.

For whom is RecyClass Traceability Certification?

The RecyClass traceability certification is primarily intended for converters within the plastic packaging industry. The certification ensures that converters maintain traceability throughout the value chain, from sourcing recycled materials to producing final plastic products. By achieving this certification, converters demonstrate their commitment to using recycled plastic transparently and responsibly in their products. This contributes to building a more sustainable and circular economy by promoting the use of recycled plastics.

What is RecyClass Traceability Certification?

The Recycled Plastics Traceability Audit Scheme assesses the physical traceability of recycled plastic material throughout all the actors of the value chain, while verifying the origin of pre- and post-consumer material in product claims.

The Certification is based on EN 15343:2007 and the principles of a controlled blending chain of custody model as defined in ISO 22095:2020. Developed to meet the needs of organizations of all sizes operating within the plastic value chain, this certification provides a standardized method for assessing the traceability of plastic materials.

By adhering to the RecyClass Traceability Certification, organizations demonstrate their commitment to using recycled material transparently and responsibly.

How does a certification trajectory look like?

The certification trajectory for RecyClass follows a structured process designed to evaluate and validate the traceability of plastic materials. It typically involves several steps:

  • To be eligible for the certification, your recycler(s) should be certified with the RecyClass Recycling Process Certification, or any other equivalent certification in line with EN 15343, and your product should be made of plastics.
  • Initial assessment: Organizations interested in obtaining RecyClass certification begin by submitting their plastic materials for evaluation. This may involve providing detailed information about the composition, design, and intended use of the packaging.
  • Evaluation by Certification Body: A recognized Certification Body, such as Kiwa, who is trained and authorized by RecyClass, conducts a thorough assessment of the plastic materials according to the relevant certification criteria. This evaluation may include tracking history, application, and location of plastic waste throughout the recycling proces, evaluation of chain of custody for recycled plastics, calculating recycled content, performance of recycling process and evaluation of blending recycled plastics with virgin materials.
  • Certification Type Selection: Based on the specific needs and goals of the organization, they may choose from different types of RecyClass certifications.
  • Certification Process: The Certification Body performs the necessary assessments and analysis to determine whether the plastic materials meets the requirements for the chosen certification type. This process may involve collaboration with recycling facilities, industry experts, and stakeholders to ensure comprehensive evaluation.
  • Issuance of Certificate: Upon successful completion of the evaluation process and meeting all certification criteria, the Certification Body issues the RecyClass certificate to the organization. This certification serves as a validation of the plastic materials traceability.
  • Periodic Review and Renewal: RecyClass certifications typically have a validity period, after which they may require renewal. Organizations must undergo periodic reviews to ensure ongoing compliance with certification standards and any updates to recycling guidelines.
