For whom is RecyClass certification?

The RecyClass Recyclability Certification is a tool for organizations across various sectors, regardless of size, engaged in the production and distribution of plastic materials. By evaluating the compatibility of plastic packaging throughout the waste management chain, including collection, sorting, recycling, and the potential for recycled material to be reused, this certification ensures that companies meet standards in sustainable packaging practices.

What is RecyClass Recyclability Certification?

The RecyClass Recyclability Certification is a comprehensive assessment framework designed to evaluate the compatibility of plastic packaging with the entire waste management chain, encompassing collection, sorting, recycling, and the potential for recycled materials to be reused in their original applications. Developed to meet the needs of organizations of all sizes operating within the plastic value chain, this certification provides a standardized method for assessing the recyclability of plastic packaging. It offers various types of assessments, including Design for Recycling Certification, which grades the technical recyclability of final packaging, and Recyclability Rate Certification, which evaluates the effectiveness of recycling within specific geographical areas.

By adhering to the RecyClass Recyclability Certification, organizations demonstrate their commitment to sustainable packaging practices, enhance their market credibility, and contribute to a more circular economy. Relevant to any organization of any size of plastic.

How does a certification trajectory look like?

The certification trajectory for RecyClass follows a structured process designed to evaluate and validate the recyclability of plastic packaging. It typically involves several steps:

  • Initial assessment: Organizations interested in obtaining RecyClass certification begin by submitting their packaging materials for evaluation. This may involve providing detailed information about the composition, design, and intended use of the packaging.
  • Evaluation by Certification Body: A recognized Certification Body, such as Kiwa, who is trained and authorized by RecyClass, conducts a thorough assessment of the packaging material according to the relevant certification criteria. This evaluation may include laboratory testing, analysis of material properties, and examination of the packaging's potential impact on recycling processes.
  • Certification Type Selection: Based on the specific needs and goals of the organization, they may choose from different types of RecyClass certifications, such as Design for Recycling Certification, Recyclability Rate Certification, or Letter of Compatibility.
  • Certification Process: The Certification Body performs the necessary assessments and analysis to determine whether the packaging meets the requirements for the chosen certification type. This process may involve collaboration with recycling facilities, industry experts, and stakeholders to ensure comprehensive evaluation.
  • Issuance of Certificate: Upon successful completion of the evaluation process and meeting all certification criteria, the Certification Body issues the RecyClass certificate to the organization. This certification serves as a validation of the packaging's recyclability and its compatibility with the waste management chain.
  • Periodic Review and Renewal: RecyClass certifications typically have a validity period, after which they may require renewal. Organizations must undergo periodic reviews to ensure ongoing compliance with certification standards and any updates to recycling guidelines.

Certification Types Recyclass

RecyClass developed several types of recyclability assessments for plastic packaging, answering the needs of the entire plastic value chain:

  • Design for Recycling Certification classifies qualitatively from A to F the technical recyclability of final plastic packaging. All the recognized Certification Bodies can perform this assessment.
  • Recyclability Rate Certification rates the effective recyclability of final plastic packaging in a specific geographical area. Please check which Certification Body is available in the geographical area of your interest.
  • Letter of compatibility evaluates qualitatively the recyclability of semi-finished packaging. All the recognized Certification Bodies are can deliver a Letter of Compatibility.
