Energy Management ISO 50001

ISO 50001 supports companies in the implementation of their energy management system and helps improve it effectively. The standard is aimed at all organizations looking to optimize their energy management and is applicable across all markets and regions worldwide. It is structured in the same way as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, making it easy to integrate. This also brings your energy management system into the annual improvement cycle.

ISO 50001 (the successor to the EN 16001 standard) is the international standard for energy management. The ISO 50001:2018 standard enables your organization to develop an energy policy and provides the tools to effectively implement it. In a world facing climate change, rising oil prices and heavy dependence on oil- and gas-producing countries, energy management is becoming an increasingly important priority. Proper energy management not only leads to cost savings but also to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The ISO 50001 standard can help your organization achieve this.

Opportunities for savings

Energy savings have become essential for both consumers and businesses when it comes to energy consumption, responsible living and entrepreneurship, sustainable energy, cost reduction, and corporate image. Implementing an ISO 50001 management system supports companies in maintaining and improving their energy performance effectively. This results in:

  • Cost savings
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • A positive impact on other environmental objectives

Energy-efficient innovations

Energy management contributes to the structural improvement of energy consumption and, as a result, to cost savings. In addition, companies that are ISO 50001-certified can demonstrate compliance with the requirements of the European Energy Efficiency Directive (EED 2012/27/EU, and from 2027, its successor 2023/1791). ISO 50001-certified companies are exempt from the obligation to conduct an energy audit.

SCCM and RvA

The Dutch Foundation for the Coordination of Certification of Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems (Stichting Coördinatie Certificatie Mileu- en arbomanagementsystemen, SCCM) collaborates with businesses, government bodies, certification institutions, and other stakeholders to create a clear and respected certification scheme for ISO 14001 (environment), EMAS (environment), ISO 50001 (energy), and ISO 45001 (occupational health & safety). SCCM enters into agreements with certification bodies on the use of these certification schemes. Kiwa is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council (Raad voor Accreditatie RvA) for conducting audits in accordance with ISO 50001 for the technical domains of buildings, building complexes, transport, energy supply and light to medium industry.
