Aerosol fire extinguishers

When applying for Dutch State Type Approval (Dutch: Rijkstypekeur) for an aerosol fire extinguisher, it is important to determine whether it is an aerosol foam extinguisher or an aerosol powder extinguisher (pressureless). There is currently no suitable solution for the latter category.
When applying for State Type Approval for an aerosol foam extinguisher, similar requirements apply as for a regular portable extinguisher. The primary requirement is that the device complies with the approval under EU Directive 75/324/EEC. This directive sets out the harmonized requirements for aerosols.
Additionally, an aerosol extinguisher must also meet the basic requirements of EN 3-7: 2004 +A1:2007. Since this standard does not allow for testing of extinguishers weighing less than 1 kg in principle, the Portable Fire Extinguishers Decree 1997 (Dutch) includes several exceptions and additions to facilitate testing. You can find these under Article 6. The principle is that every extinguisher, regardless of weight or content, must have a minimum performance requirement of 5A and 21B.
In practice, this means that an A-rated extinguisher must have at least 5A and a B-rated extinguisher must have at least 21B. For an A+B-rated extinguisher, the requirement is 5A and 21B. For a specific application such as a fat extinguisher, the minimum performance requirement still needs to be determined.
