Last October 2024, the new version of the BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials, Issue 7, was published and officially came into effect on April 28, 2025. This update introduces important changes for companies supplying packaging materials, with a particular focus on the food and pharmaceutical sectors.

Key Updates in BRC Packaging Issue 7

The new standard was developed based on the previous Issue 6, aiming to align guidelines with other current BRC standards and the Codex Alimentarius. The main changes introduced in Issue 7 include:

  • Extension of the scope to single-use products intended for food contact, such as napkins, cups, and cutlery
  • Increased focus on allergen management in packaging production
  • New rules for Blended audits
  • Increase in the maximum number of consecutive audits without interruption, from 3 to 5
  • Introduction of risk-based hygiene requirements for more effective and customized management
  • Simplification of the unannounced audit programme, now provided in a single operational mode.
