Non-destructive testing

Not every structural analysis requires interventions in the building fabric. Various non-destructive or low-destructive test methods are available, especially for an initial assessment of the existing damage potential or to confirm the correct construction.

If critical influences on concrete components cannot be ruled out during the construction phase, estimates of the condition of the building substance must be made or basic data collected for the planning of conversion measures, non-destructive or low-destructive tests can be used cost-effectively.

Target group: Building owners, architectural offices, engineering offices and planning companies, owners or property managers, towns and municipalities

In civil engineering, non-destructive testing (NDT) is often understood to mean only a visual inspection and the use of a rebound hammer. In addition to these relatively simple methods, there are a large number of additional non-destructive testing methods (radar, ultrasound) available for the existing inspection. These are also part of our range of services.

If non-destructive information on structures is required, e.g. on component thickness, cavities, existing reinforcement in the concrete, then Kiwa is the right company for you.

For the different tasks in the field of non-destructive testing in civil engineering, various methods are available, e.g. radar, ultrasound, magnetic reinforcement location or thermography. Depending on the problem and the boundary conditions, the different methods can be applied.

The radar method is used to determine:

  • Structures (layer thicknesses of concrete and masonry components, screed, traffic routes, earthworks, etc.)
  • Reinforcement and installation parts (dowels, anchors, pipes, etc.)
  • Moisture and salt distribution, damaged areas (cracks, detachments, cavities, hidden structural situations)

The ultrasonic echo method is used in civil engineering for the determination of concrete and wood components:

  • Component dimensions (uniform thickness, recesses)
  • Damage (cavities, gravel pockets, detachments, cracks parallel to the surface), layer changes and material inhomogeneities

Active thermography can be used to locate:

  • Cavities, gravel nests in concrete, detachments, cavities in hard screeds, split clinkers, CFRP laminates on concrete and plasters
  • Areas of increased moisture in areas close to the surface

We advise you on the selection of the most appropriate test methods for you and carry out the tests competently and effectively. You will receive the results in clearly arranged and detailed expert opinions and test reports together with a technical evaluation of the condition encountered.
